Renault Plans More Than €10bn Push Into EVs and Affordable Cars, With Lessons for South African Buyers

October 7, 2026

Quick Facts

  • Renault CEO François Provost said the carmaker plans to invest more than €10bn in France over the next five years
  • The money would go into electric vehicles and making cars more affordable, provided France’s social and political climate allows it
  • Renault committed €13bn to EV production in France over the past five years
  • Renault’s Brazilian joint venture with Geely, a brand now familiar to South African buyers, received a further 2bn reais
  • Total committed investment in Brazil now stands at 5.8bn reais through 2027

Renault is prepared to spend more than €10bn on electric vehicles and more affordable cars over the next five years, but only if conditions in its home country allow it. For South African buyers, the second half of that pledge may matter just as much as the first.

Chief executive François Provost outlined the plan on France Inter radio on Saturday, 3 October 2026, in remarks reported by Bloomberg. Renault, in which the French state holds a 15% stake, committed €13bn to expanding EV production in France over the past five years, and Provost said the company was ready to keep going.

“Over the next five years, if the social and political context in France allows it, we will invest more than €10bn to continue pushing ahead with EVs and make cars more affordable,” he was quoted as saying.

Why affordability resonates locally

South Africa is one of the most price-sensitive new-car markets Renault operates in, and the brand has long competed here at the entry end with models such as the Kwid and Kiger. A global strategy that puts affordability alongside electrification speaks directly to the pressures local buyers face, where the cost of an EV remains one of the biggest barriers to wider adoption.

Investment of this scale in Renault’s engineering base also feeds the technology and platforms that eventually filter through to markets far beyond France.

A home market under pressure

The condition Provost attached reflects growing uncertainty in France. National elections are seven months away, and the minority government is locked in a parliamentary fight over a budget that leans heavily on spending cuts and higher taxes on large corporations to bring down the deficit.

Markets have reacted sharply. French assets have been sold off, and sovereign borrowing costs this week reached levels last seen at the height of the euro-area debt crisis 15 years ago.

Provost called the market moves “worrying” for Renault, which relies on France for 20% of its business and 40% of its workforce.

“We have really bet on France and we will continue to bet on France. So any scenario of instability in France would have a major impact on Renault, a major impact on our employees and a major impact on our suppliers, so yes, I am worried,” he said.

The China question, seen from South Africa

Provost also repeated his call for the European Union to act on imbalances in automotive trade with China. It’s a debate South African motorists will recognise, with Chinese brands now a fixture in local showrooms and reshaping expectations around price and technology.

Renault and Geely deepen ties in Brazil

That relationship isn’t purely competitive. Renault and its Chinese partner Geely last month pledged a further 2bn reais to their joint venture in Brazil, taking total committed investment there to 5.8bn reais through 2027. Brazil, like South Africa, is a major emerging market where affordable, locally relevant vehicles drive the bulk of sales.
